CIVIL WAR ERA, 1862-1875, USMC, DRESS HAT EMBLEM, w/SILVER M, ORIGINALOriginal period manufacture. This front plate went on the front of a M1875 USMC shako. This has an applied bugle with a centered silvered letter M (for Marines) insignia, mounted to a die-stamped brass shield base This plate has 13 stars which are
raised
, and a unique six -pointed star at the base of this shield. The bugle and the silvered letter M are affixed to the plate into three rectangular apertures that were cut into the shield and held into place by small leather strips. The plate still retains all three of the retention loops. The plate sits above a laurel wreath with small berries. The wreath was affixed to the helmet with two U shaped wires which are still present. Emblem display nice patina due to age. 100% original and a nice addition to your USMC collection. This originates from an established collection of USMC Militaria.
On July 23, 1861, the Commandant John Harris expressed his written opinion that the 1859 pattern brass full dress hat ornament was too large and thereby directed that it be reduced in size by 25%. Allowing sufficient time for a contractor to respond to the order and produce the new USMC emblems, it had to be late 1862 or even into 1863 before this shield and wreath could have been issued to enlisted men or purchased by Officers. This shield and wreath are referenced in "United States Marine Corp Emblems, 1804 - World War I, Frederick L. Briuer, PH.D." Page 35.
