The story, set in the closing years of the
Northern Song
dynasty, tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gather at
Mount Liang
(or Liangshan Marsh) to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty by the government and sent on campaigns to resist foreign invaders (
Liao
) and suppress rebel forces (
Fang La
). It has introduced readers to many of the best-known characters in Chinese literature, such as
Wu Song

Lin Chong
,
Pan Jinlian
,
Song Jiang
and
Lu Zhishen
.
Since there are 108 characters in this Chinese classic, twenty seven four sided bottles were custom carved from man made crystal for this project. Li Yaming, niece of master inside painting artist Li Shouxun, then began the over two year project to paint each of these famous characters inside these bottles; one per bottle side.
