    Description

Offered is a Type 2b with hinge-pin, marked "Patented  /  Charles W. Crankshaw  /  Atlanta".
Note I have placed a paper cut over the flag, as showing images of the flag is a violation of ebay policy.
If you would like unedited photos of the medal that also show the flag, please message me and I will send privately through the messaging system.
This is a very fine, original Southern Cross of Honor, featuring the classic characteristics of the very early Type 2b, Crankshaw back-mark, and hinge pin.  The patina is a warm, even, very rich chocolate bronze.
The Southern Cross of Honor is highly sought after and highly collectable.  They are beautiful investments and steadily appreciate in value.
Mrs. Alexander Erwin "a true daughter of the Old South ... imbued with Patriotism and love for the Southland since her youth", attended the 1898 United Confederate Veterans reunion in Atlanta Georgia, and their conceived the idea for "a Cross of Honor for valor and patriotism to be bestowed on Confederate veterans."  As a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, she successfully proposed and initiated the Southern Cross of Honor design and petitioning program.  It is estimated that approximately 79,000 Southern Cross of Honor medals were bestowed to proven Confederate veterans.
