    Description

Up for bid is a wonderful vintage patriotic postcard. This card shows a colorful lithographic illustration of Old Glory waving valiantly over a scene of a Civil War naval battle in progress. It features two of the most famous iron-clad ships of that time: The Monitor and the Merrimac. The colors are very vivid and the artistry is just great! When you supersize image 1 you can see the details on this card. "The Battle of Hampton Roads, often referred to as either the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (or Virginia) or the Battle of Ironclads, was the most noted and arguably most important naval battle of the American Civil War from the standpoint of the development of navies. It was fought over two days, March 8–9, 1862, in Hampton Roads, a roadstead in Virginia where the Elizabeth and Nansemond Rivers meet the James River just before it enters Chesapeake Bay adjacent to the city of Norfolk. The battle was a part of the effort of the Confederacy to break the Union blockade, which had cut off Virginia's largest cities, Norfolk and Richmond, from international trade." SOURCE: Wikipedia Printed in pre-WWI Saxony, and published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, this beautifully embossed card has been postally used and has a 1907 cancellation across the one-cent stamp on its divided back. Here is a wonderful vintage card that is ready for framing or to add to your Patriotic or Civil War postcard collection. Better bid now, before another collector takes this piece of history away forever.
