ORIGINAL 1860s US ARMY JEFF DAVIS HARDEE HAT EAGLE INSIGNIA HAT PLATE BADGE PIN

Description

Rare and original Civil War Period, Stamped Brass, Eagle Form, “Jeff Davis” Hardee Hat Insignia / Hardee Hat Plate. This 1858 Regulation eagle Hardee Hat Plate was used on an enlisted man's dress (Hardee) hat to secure the folded side of the brim of the hat against the crown. It was originally introduced in 1851 as a pompon eagle, attached to the base of the pompon holder in the front of the 1851 Shako. With the adoption of the Hardee Hat by the entire army in 1858 the metal plate was reused to loop the side of the hat up.
This very attractive Cap Badge measures approx. 2 5/8" tall and 1 7/8" wide across the tips of the eagle’s wings. The Plate are stamped from a medium weight, shell brass and has a t-form hinged pin affixed to the back that has replaced the wire loops originally used to affix the Insignia to the side of the Hardee Hat.
This wonderful Civil War Period, Jeff Davis, Hardee Hat Plate is 100% unconditionally guaranteed to be original and of the Civil War period. It is in very good condition with no damage or repairs and with a rich and warm surface patina but with the loops on the reverse replaced with a hinged pin.
