    Description

RMS Mauretania 1906 - original Brass Inspection lamp - superb item
Here we have a simply great piece of history, an original brass inspection hand lamp / lantern from RMS Mauretania, sister ship of the Luisitania.
This would have used an oil / parafin to fuel the burner. It has its original glass and the lamp has its small burner in the front with its original mirror and reflector. These would have increased the light output.
Accross the top is the ships name and to the rear of that a small turnable thumbwheel with a pointer. The pointer indicates on a dail 1 to 10, and I think this may have been a type of intensity or maybe focus control.
To the rear of that on the back end is a mount so the lamp could be placed on a flat mount and secured to enable both hands to work maybe.
There is a lovely patina on the lamp and when new it may have been silver colour / tinned and this has worn over years of service to reveal the brass base metal. When you remove the fuel tank, it reveals sections that are usually hidden, and the original bright silver / tin colour can be seen
This is the most complete example I have seen, the only other was missing its burner and reflector etc.
The only issues I can see is one of the legs has been knocked, the leg is fine, but the brass has cracked (10mm / 0.5 inch), and there is
a small crack in the rear case (20mm). Please see photos. But this are minor and the edges are dark on both, so not new or recent damage.
    Dimensions
The maximum length is 7 inches / 175mm. The lamp stands 6.75 inches / 170mm tall. The glass is 3.5 inches / 90mm in diameter.
Manufacturer.I have looked all over, inside (so far as you can get) and outside and cannot see a makers name. It may have been part of the equipment and fittings made within the shipyard and as such may not have had their name on it.
Now a little bit about the RMS Mauretania, the legendary ship this lantern came from.
British built, she was launched in 1906, she was the sister ship of the RMS Lusitania
Mauretania displaced 31,938 tons and she was the largest ship afloat until 1911but Mauretania remained the fastest ocean liner for some 20 years
Her original specification called for a service speed of 24 knots she soon took the famous Blue Riband in her first season over the North Atlantic and held that until 1929
She served her country and the allies in World War I
A firm favourite with many rich and famous people, President Roosevelt protested her retirement in 1934 he wrote to Cunard asking them to reconsider their decision.
And maybe the ship herself was not ready to go either after 28 years of hard Atlantic and war service, on her last eastbound crossing in September 1934, Mauretania maintained an average speed of 24 knots - she was still able to achieve her design specified.
Certainly a feat that stands testament to the seamanship of her crew and the skill of the engineers who built her.
