Description
On offer is a very attractive and very scarce souvenir spoon from the first year of Mauretania 2's post WW2 service. Like Aquitania, she had only a few voyages before being requisitioned until September 1946. Date coded to 1947 by the "L". The anchor shows Birmingham as the source and the lion indicates sterling silver. I can not determine the makers mark. Large detail shown of the marks on the Reverse. The two toned enamel is strong and bright, depicting the Cunard Crest and proudly proclaiming the ships name. A very fine example of a sought after date. Mauretania 2 was refurbished and re-entered service with a crossing in April 1947 - the year this spoon is dated. By 1962 she had been painted green and was mainly use for cruises. She remained in service until 1965, when she was scrapped
at Thos. W. Ward's ship breaking yard in Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland.
Measuring 4 1/4" in length and 1" across the crest. Extremely Fine condition with no flaws. Not over-cleaned - rich with detailed crest and full un-cracked enamel.
